Abstract
We present an overview of TianHe(TH) supercomputers and computational biology applications on them, which is built by National University of Defense Technology of China (NUDT). TianHe-1 adopts hybrid architecture by integrating CPUs and GPUs. TH-1A is 4700 TFlops, and its LINPACK test result is 2566 TFlops. It was ranked the No.1 on the world TOP500 List released in November, 2010. In June 2013, Tianhe-2 topped the TOP500 list of fastest supercomputers in the world. The computer beat out second place finisher Titan by nearly a 2-to-1 margin. Titan, which is housed at the U.S. Department of Energy`s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, achieved 17.59 petaflops, while Tianhe-2 achieved 33.86 petaflops. Tianhe-2`s phenomenal performance returned the title of the world`s fastest supercomputer to China after Tianhe-I`s debut in November 2010. TH-1A supercomputers are now deployed in National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin. TH-2 deployed in Guangzhou is mainly oriented in medicine made, sequence analysis, and computational biology. Many well-known bioinformatics softwares (BWA, SOAP3-dp, SOAPdenovo 2, SOAPfuse etc.) are developed and running on TH-2. Now, we have been involved in some scientific problems and research works on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, such as large genomes assembly, sequence alignment, and Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS), fusion transcripts identification from paired-end RNA-Seq data, and so on, using TH-2 supercomputer. These Computational Biology problems can be classified into 3 classes:computation intensive, memory intensive, and communication intensive. We can design and provide deferent solutions dealing with 3 kinds of problems not only in hardware but also in software. In future TH-2 will be open online to all the life scientists not only in China but also all over the world.
Bio of Presenter: Prof. Shaoliang Peng (NUDT, China)
Dr. Shaoliang Peng is an professor in National University of Defense Technology国防科技大学 (NUDT, Changsha, China) and an adjunct professor of Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI). He got his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science (CS) from NUDT in 2003 and 2008, respectively. He also received his B.S. degrees on Mathematics from NUDT in 2001. He was a visiting scholar at CS Department of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from 2007 to 2008 and at BGI Hong Kong from 2013 to 2014. His research interests are high-performance parallel computing, bioinformatics, mobile computing, and biology simulation. He has participated in many keystone projects in China such as TianHe supercomputers. He is PI of several projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He has authored many original papers – of which some are published in Genome Biology, PloS ONE, and GigaScience.
