There is a wide range of normal variation in genes across the population. Like the shape of our faces, our susceptibility to common diseases including cancer, is determined by the genetic ‘hand of cards’ that we are dealt at conception. Some individuals are dealt a good hand of cards, others a bad hand. The effect can be surprisingly strong : models suggest that in breast cancer, for example, the difference in risk between the 20% with the best hand of cards and the 20% with the worst may be as much as 40-fold, which means that half of all breast cancers may occur in the 12% of women at greatest risk.
Clearly if we could identify the genetic variants relevant to each disease, and understand how they interact with each other and the environment, there could be important applications to public health. We could predict individual risk, and classify the population for screening into higher and lower risk groups for screening; and possibly, if we understood the mechanisms of risk, we could think of ways to target new methods of prevention.
