Peripheral sensory neurons often show spontaneous activity, which is driven by spontaneous activations of sensory receptor proteins even in the absence of stimuli. The impact of such activity on sensory perception is, however, unclear. We have illustrated that, in visual system, it could represent noise that interferes with the perception of light; on the other hand, the inhibition of such activity by a sensory stimulus, such as in olfaction, likely serves as an important sensory signal.
