摘要:How the brain shifts between processing different information streams, a vital attribute of cognitive function, is an open question in modern neuroscience. Understanding the circuit mechanisms of this process will be of basic and translational significance given that disrupted information processing underlies several psychiatric disorders. Interactions among cortical and thalamic circuits are thought to mediate the computations necessary for cognitive function, but how these interactions are regulated to allow for shifts among processing streams is unknown. In my talk, I will present evidence that the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), the major inhibitory input to thalamus provides a circuit mechanism for solving this problem. Combining multi-electrode recordings and optogenetic tagging of TRN neurons defined by their thalamic connectivity, we have dissected TRN architecture in the freely behaving mouse. Using novel psychophysical tasks, we have shown that the TRN allows for independent control of thalamic nuclei based on behavioral demands. Overall, these findings provide insight into a possible `switchboard` mechanism of how thalamo-cortical interactions are regulated to guide cognitive function.
