As one class of small non-coding regulatory RNAs, plant microRNAs (miRNAs) are canonically 20-22 nucleotides (nt) in length and bind to complementary target RNA sequences, guiding targets attenuation via mRNA degradation or translation inhibition. Recently, a class of 24-nt long miRNAs (lmiRNAs) has been characterized by us as epigenetic regulators through DNA methylation for gene modulations in rice, suggesting a more complicated miRNA population and network present in monocots than previously assumed. Here, I will discuss our recent findings in canonical and non-canonical miRNAs in monocots, including their biogenesis, associated effectors, and modes to targets as well as specifically physiological functions.
