Abstract:
Background: Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has been effective therapy in laboratory animal models of Parkinson`s disease.
Results: A human de novo gene, GDNFOS (GDNF Opposite Strand), was discovered and encodes a 105 amino acid secreted peptide. A dopamine neuron stimulating peptide (DNSP) was found in the proregion of GDNF alpha isoform transcribed from a human-specific promoter.
Conclusion: GDNF, DNSP and GDNFOS are differentially regulated in middel temporal gyrus of Alzheimer`s disease.
Significance: GDNF, DNSP and GDNFOS neurotrophins may be used in treatment of human neurodegenerative diseases.
