FMRI can map brain functional changes in the system level. Slice electrophysiology, such as patch clamp, is used to analyze the cellular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity. How to use fMRI results to steer system-to-synaptic plasticity studies remains challenging. We first developed a navigation strategy to use the data acquired by fMRI and manganese-enhanced MRI to guide slice electrophysiology. Here, we reported novel post-critical period thalamocortical plasticity in the adolescent rat brain following peripheral nerve injury. The global feature of fMRI also leads us to identify the interhemispheric plasticity detected in the deafferented cortex. Preliminary study has been performed to implement optogenetic tools in fMRI to map the callosal fiber mediated brain function across the two hemispheres. Future study will be focused on using optogenetic tools to manipulate callosal activity in either adaptive or maladaptive interhemipheric plasticity to facilitate the functional recovery in animal models with stroke, epilepsy, or peripheral nerve injuries.
