SEEKING A NEW
BALANCE Student Conference
on Conservation Sciences (SCCS)-Beijing Student Sub-Forum of the Beijing Forum November 7-10, 2014
Registration Form & abstract submission (click to download)
BACKGROUND
China is one of the world’s “mega-biodiversity” countries, ranking third in plant diversity and providing habitats for roughly ten percent of the world’s animals. With the world’s largest human population and fastest-growing economy, China’s development successes and failures have global implications for the environment and development. China’s growth had brought hundreds of millions out of absolute poverty and created economic opportunities, in the meantime, however, had the cost of environment and natural resources, following the unsustainable development trajectory of western countries. Water, air and soil pollution began to have a severe impact on human health and ecosystems; land use change and infrastructure construction caused degradation of natural habitats and watersheds. With growing demands and affordability, China’s import in natural resources is posing a rapidly increasing footprint over the biodiversity and ecosystems in the world. All these happened in the past three decades
The magnitude of the issues in China presents an opportunity for the public and private sector to demonstrate environmental leadership and develop policies and programs that make both economic and environmental sense. Building a “Harmonious Society” and promote conservation culture has been set up by the Chinese government as China’s development goal. However, lack of qualified conservation professionals remains a significant gap. SCCS-Beijing aims to contribute in filling this gap.
Beijing Forum is an annual international forum co-sponsored by Peking University, Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, and Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies since 2004.
The general theme of Beijing Forum is “The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All”. Beijing Forum aims at promoting the study of humanities and social sciences around the world. It endeavors to promote academic development and social progress across the world in order to contribute to the development and prosperity of humankind. SCCS-Beijing will be a sub-forum focusing on students and young conservation professionals held annually.
The Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) is the only international series of conservation conferences aimed entirely at students and young conservation scientists. It has been held for 14 years. It was first held in Cambridge and nowadays has sister conferences in Australia, Bangalore and New York. It not only helps participants gain experience and learn new ideas, but also make contacts for future careers.
SCCS in Beijing is collaboration between Cambridge University and Peking University, two influential schools, to meet the needs of mobilizing and training more qualified young conservation professionals in response to the growing societal interests in ecological conservation. SCCS-Beijing also has an intention of promoting communications among young conservationists in China region.
The SCCS-Beijing is presently associated to Beijing Forum.
The general theme of Beijing Forum is “The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All”. Either civilizations or prosperity of human beings could exist without the environment in which they rooted and grew. Seeking a new balance between human and the environments is also the key elements for the harmony of civilizations, and the pathway to our prosperity.
While the original balance between humanity and the nature, if there had been one, has been broken and irreversible in many ways, understanding the current status and trends, and building a new balance becomes a responsibility of this and future generations.
SCCS-Beijing 2014 aims to recruit young people that care about the harmonious development of nature and society to share knowledge and experiences.
The topics of SCCS-Beijing 2014 would include:
- Explore: the study of the biodiversity at all levels and related social issues
- Exchange: knowledge in conservation sciences and experiences and lessons learned through conservation practice
- Sharing across generations: Senior scholars and conservationists bring their own knowledge and wisdoms to be shared with young students.
The meeting agenda will be developed with details according to applications submitted and will be announced in October 2014, which will include the following general sessions: :
-Plenary speech: There will be 6-8 renowned conservationists from China and abroad to give keynote speeches for inspiration;
-Student presentation: students are selected to present their research and work to share and exchange;
-Posters: more students will present their work with posters, allowing more interaction and discussions among students;
-Workshops: trainings on skills will be offered by co-organizer including research institutions and NGOs

Side Event - Future Scientists
Alongside the main SCCS-Beijing 2013 Conference, Center for Nature and Society, Peking University and Shan Shui Conservation Center organized a high-school-student event called “Future Scientist”, so as to provide a chance for high school students to take part in conservation research and activities.
We encourage high school students to raise their own questions, design a research project/activity plan to find the answer. The winner projects would be awarded the “George Schaller/Shan Shui Fellowship”, as well as a year’s guidance from academic researchers to finish their project.
We received a total of 56 application projects from students in Beijing (42), Shandong (7), Guangdong (3), Hunan (1), Chongqing (1), Shanghai (1) and Liaoning. According to creativity, significance, feasibility, 11 project were selected, 5 of which came to Peking University in the evening of November 3rd to do oral defense, and George Schaller, Lu Zhi, Andrew Balmford, Gary Kofinas and Ullas Karanth were the judging committee.
In the end the “conservation of the underwater giant pandas – the Chinese white dolphin” by a group of students from Guangzhou Foreign School won the first prize, “The harmful waste manage system” By Liu Siyu from Guangzhou, “The feral cats and dogs caring project” by students from No. 101 High School won the 2nd prize.
