Journal Club | Roles of mitochondria in metabolic stress response

Abstract:
Mitochondria has long been considered as a fascinating organelle with its own genome, which can affect several aspects of lives from energy transformation, dynamics, intracellular signaling and to many other biochemical functions. To accommodate environment, mitochondria possess a great ability of sensing and integrating outside signals to perform its biological functions. Recently it has been found that many metabolites (i.e. certain amino acids like glutamine, cellular energy level representor like AMP, glucose, fatty acids, etc.) can serve as signaling molecules, and activate certain sensor (i.e. AMPK), leading to changes in mitochondria dynamics including reshaping, recycling, motility, etc. While mitochondria stress response (i.e. UPRmt) can further influence cellular stress response and protecting cells from diseases. In this way, the metabolic stress, cellular energy level, mitochondria dynamics and its biological functions can be harmoniously integrated together to achieve maximum efficiency. This topic hope to introduce how lives coordinate metabolic stress with mitochondria response and the detailed mechanism of this process.
