Regulation of mitochondria fission by ER-mito contacts
Mar.24.2018Speaker:Yiwen Zhang (张怡文) Ran Liu (刘然) Minming Wang (王闽铭)
Abstract:
In eukaryotic cells, mitochondria exist as a highly interconnected tubular network that undergoes continuous fission and fusion events. Disturbed mitochondrial dynamics have been shown to mediate various neurodegenerative disorders. It is well established that dynamin-related protein (DRP1) mediates mitochondrial fission by wrapping around the constriction points of dividing mitochondria. It’s been over six decades since the discovery and characterization of the Architecture at Mitochondria-Associated Membranes (MAMs). Recent researches have demonstrated that the endoplasmic reticulum plays a role in determining mitochondrial division sites through players like ER-associated formin, actin, and mtDNA synthesis. These new findings indicate that organelles within a cell are not isolated entities, but are closely connected in complex ways.
