Take a step back: mapping spinal circuits and rethinking current pain research
Apr.28.2017Speaker:Qiufu Ma, Ph.D.
Abstract:
Pain management remains a medical challenge. During past two decades, preclinical animal studies have identified numerous molecular targets for pain treatment, but few of them have been translated into new medicines. In team together with Martyn Goulding lab, we have been using genetic, behavioral and electrophysiological tools to map spinal circuits transmitting somatic sensory information. In this talk, I will show some preliminary evidence arguing that the current pain field might have been using wrong ways to measure acute mechanical or thermal pain, and also does not measure the clinically more relevant chronic neuropathic mechanical pain.
