Title: Motor neuron diversity in C.elegans



Abstract:

Movement is one of the critical abilities for animals to survive. In human being, there are around 600 subtypes of muscles and around 600 subtypes of motor neurons to control the locomotion. One of the fundamental question in developmental neurobiology is that how the diversity of motor neuron is generated and maintained during life. To address this question, researchers use C. elegans as a model animal because of its system simplicity and evolutionary conservation. It’s reported that UNC-3, an evolutionary conserved transcription factor, regulates both the shared and the type-specific molecular features of different motor neurons. UNC-3 collaborates with different type-specific repressors to achieve the motor neuron diversity. Further research would constitute a general principle for motor neuron diversity across species.
